Taxonomic composition and modern status of rare woody plants of Karabakh

Summary

The article presents the taxonomic composition of rare tree and shrub plants naturally distributed in the Karabakh region, which was under Armenian occupation for 30 years based on personal observations and literature data. The phytogeographical origin of the researched rare plant species was analyzed and their life forms were determined. These species have been assessed on the threat categories according to the 2001 IUCN version 3.1. As a result of the research, it was found that 36 rare trees and shrubs belonging to 18 families and 27 genera are distributed in the area. It was determined that 10 species are included in the CR hazard category, 2 species in the EN category, 12 species in the VU category, 9 species in the NT category, 2 species in the LC category, and one species in the DD category. Of these studied plant species, 5 are relict, 29 are rare, and 2 are endemic. Life forms of rare tree and shrub plants were studied, 13 of these rare species are mesophanerophytes, 11 are microphanerophytes, 9 are nanophanerophytes, 2 are megaphanerophytes and one is an epiphytephanerophyte and in terms of phytogeographical origin, 21 species are Mediterranean, 11 are Iran-Turan, and 4 are Europe-Siberian.
