POMOLOGICAL AND PHENOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF WILD GROWING SPECIES AND SOME SWEET CHERRY (PRUNUS AVIUM L.) CULTIVARS

Summary

Cherry (Prunus avium) is an important fruit crop worldwide. Biomorphological traits of cherry plants cultivated in the Khachmaz district have been studied. Observations have been also made on phenological phases of the plants. The periods of swelling and opening of buds were com- paratively studied in different varieties of sweet cherries. It is assumed that the flowering and maturation phases are related to climatic factors. In the Khachmaz district, wild type cherry plants distributed in mixed mountain forests. This plant is also cultivated in farms and yards. Both local and introduced cherry varieties have been studied. Samples were collected in the Gochagly village of the Khachmaz district located at 140-150 meters above sea level. This study was conducted to determine pomological fruit properties of different cherry species including 9 varities and 1 wild cherry (‘Regina’, ‘Khrustal’, ‘Alyanag’, ‘Chahrayi Napoleon’, ’Gara Krimson’, ‘Ramon Oliva’, ‘Girmizi Krim’, ‘Ag gilas’, ‘Early Krasnadar’ and ‘Wild cherry’). For this purpose, together with various pomological traits, total sugar (%), were analyzed in fruits of relevant species. Result of all examined traits significantly varied between species. Wild cherry showed the highest total sugar (26,9%) contents. Early Krasnadar gave the highest fruit weight (9,1 g) and Ramon Oliva showed the highest stone weight (0,82 g).
